Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been arrested by Pakistani police on Saturday.
ISLAMABAD —
Former Prime
Minister Khan was detained by Pakistani police on Saturday at his residence in
the eastern city of Lahore. The well-liked opposition leader has been
imprisoned twice already this year.
His
conviction in an asset concealing case earlier on Saturday resulted in a prison
sentence that could prevent him from running for office. Following Khan's
conviction by the Islamabad court, police in Lahore moved swiftly to transport
him from his residence to the Pakistani capital.
Khan's campaign to regain power has been dealt a
new setback. Since being removed from office in a no-confidence vote in the
parliament in April 2022, Khan has been the target of more than 150 legal
proceedings, including several on charges of corruption, terrorism, and
inciting violence over deadly protests in May that saw his supporters attack
government and military property all over the nation.
